St.BernardSheriff’sOfficeTeams up with League of Angels Players The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Of- fice teamed up with members of the League of Angels Tuesday, April 30 for some friendly competition on the baseball diamond. The League of Angels, a sports league for St. Bernard Parish chil- dren and adults with special needs, provides participants with a chance to bond with other individuals who face similar challenges, while build- ing character and self-esteem and creating lasting friendships. Deputies from the Sheriff’s Of- fice served as buddies for partici- pants in Tuesday evening’s games held at Val Riess Sports Complex in Chalmette. Sheriff James Pohlmann, who served as pitcher, was joined by members of the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Bureau, Special Investigations Division, Communications and Administra- tion. The mission of the League of Angels is to positively affect the lives of special needs residents by offer- ing camaraderie, and joy of play, that organized recreational activities facilitate. More Photos on Page 6 Meraux Foundation Announces 2019 Scholarship Recipients By Todd Ragusa The Arlene and Joseph Meraux Charitable Founda- tion awarded 60 scholarships to St. Bernard Parish 2019 high school graduates at a ceremony last week. Annu- ally, the Foundation awards 50 scholarships based on academic achievement, four based on artistic accomplish- ment, and six for vocational- technical school. To date, the Foundation has awarded some 840 scholarships val- ued at more than $2.6 mil- lion. “It is my great honor to congratulate all the Meraux Foundation Scholars as they begin the next chapter of their lives,” said Rita Gue, the president of the Meraux Foundation. “We support ed- ucational initiatives to help put our young people on a pathway to prosperity and prepare the next generation of leaders in St. Bernard Par- ish.” In addition to annual scholarships, the Meraux Foundation supports numer- ous educational initiatives, including having donated the land for the Arlene Meraux Elementary School, spon- soring student events, part- nering with Chalmette High School and Nunez Communi- ty College on a CTE program, presenting the Mississippi River Delta Institute, and partnering with the LSU Ag- Center to produce AgMagic on the River, among others.
